Established in 2002 August Cellars was created by members of the third and fourth generations of the August Schaad family. The goal of the winery is two fold: first, to create a great wine for a great price; second, to continue the legacy of our family farm -- preserving it for future generations.
August Cellars produces approximately 2500 cases per year, including Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Maréchal Foch, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. We feel that it is important to have a variety of wines, as there is not a single wine for everyone or every occasion. Our wines are robust, full of flavor and meant to be enjoyed over food with family and friends.
We named our winery in honor of our forefather, August Schaad, who emigrated from the Black Forest region of Southern Germany to the U.S. in the 1890's. Finally settling down with his wife Anna Schaad across the highway from here, on Parrett Mountain. There they established a family farm, raised seven children and were pillars in the local community of Rex.
The winery is located on farmland bought by Clarence Schaad in 1942. Clarence was August and Anna's oldest child. Clarence's two surviving children, Lewis and Grace, both retired teachers, now tend the orchards of walnuts and prunes on the farm.
The winery is operated by Jim and Tom Schaad, Lewis' two sons. Jim is the winemaker, while Tom oversees the day-to-day operations of the winery.
We believe in sustainable and low impact farming. To this end we work to minimize the use of pesticides and herbicides. This includes the orchards above the winery. It is our firm belief that as long as we can produce wines for a fair value, we will be able to create a wine that you will enjoy.
